There are typically two types of situations for using fire retardant paints and coatings.
RDR is quite familiar with the fire codes, and what is required in most situations. We can recommend the products that will meet code, be cost effective, and meet your aesthetic requirements. We define coatings as a liquid that primarily sits on the surface of the substrate, rather than a saturant, which soaks into the wood or fabric. Here are a few options:
If you are in the middle of new construction, or renovating an older building, the fire marshal may require a one or two hour rating on any exposed steel beams or columns. Specially designed for structural steel, the new Contego High Solids formula means you can get the same great results using 20% less paint. A thinner coat means less labor costs to get the desired rating. No special certifications or equipment are required beyond a strong hydraulic airless sprayer (3300 psi) and the ability to measure the thickness of the paint. Contego accomplishes in a few thin coats what takes other coatings 10 or more!
The regular Contego formula is designed to protect a wide range of building materials, including dimensional lumber, manufactured wood products, trusses, drywall, spray polyurethane foam insulation, HDPE wall panels, concrete, plaster, solid core doors and more.

The regular Contego formula is designed to protect a wide range of building materials, including dimensional lumber, manufactured wood products, trusses, drywall, spray polyurethane foam insulation, HDPE wall panels, concrete, plaster, solid core doors and more. Contego may also be used for conduit, decking and cladding.
CONTEGO’s Passive Fireproofing Barrier (PFB) is a latex, water-based coating that can be applied to virtually any type of building material and provides up to three hours protection (on certain steel applications and concrete). When exposed to high heat or fire, Contego's passive firebarrier thin film coating swells or “intumesces” to form a tough char barrier that stops the fire by blocking access to the fuel it needs to grow.
Once the fire has been extinguished, extensive testing by certified laboratories shows the resulting foam layer actually minimizes the damage to the substrate. Often the substrate may still be useable. In many instances, the protective char can be scraped off, revealing that the underlying substrate is still sound, and repair can be achieved at a fraction of the cost. SHOPPING CART
BanFire flame retardant paint is high-coverage intumescent paint that is great for non-structural needs, such as the walls of boiler rooms, basement ceilings, electrical panels, clean rooms, spray rooms and more. It has a coverage rate of approximately 350 sq ft per gallon, so it is extremely economical, yet it is incredibly effective. It is an ASTM E84 Class A rated paint, acceptible on most construction materials that do not require a time rating.
RDR Technologies specializes in fire retardants, fire suppressants, and several other specialty chemicals. In addition to making our own formulas, we offer many excellent products from other manufacturers as well. We have available several other fire retardants that are not listed here. If you have a need for a special type of fire retardant, or you are not sure which product you need, feel free to call Doug at 405-702-0055, and we will do our best to get you the correct product.
