What is a fire retardent?

Flame retardants provide us with a new, better layer of fire protection. When added to different materials, flame retardant paints can help prevent fires from starting or at the very least limit their spread. Fire retardant paints work primarily to provide people with additional time to get out of the building before it is fully engulfed in flames. They also allow for ample time for the fire department to arrive and start putting out the flames.

How do they work?

In order for a fire to start, three elements must be present. These are oxygen, heat, and fuel. When fire retardant paint is applied to a surface, the coat reduces or removes the “fuel” aspect of what the fire needs to thrive. Contact with fire retardant paint halts fires in its tracks, because it no longer has all three things it needs. The heat emitted from the flames causes the paint to release a fire dampening gas, which in turn prevents the fire from fully developing.
