Description

PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE is the only long-term fire retardant available to homeowners. Homeowners in fire-prone locations apply PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE to their yards as a preventative measure to safeguard their families, homes, and property from wild fires.

The environmentally-friendly formula is a clear, uncolored version of the same product the United States Forest Service (USFS) has relied on for their firefighting air tanker fleets for over 55 years. Products are developed in compliance with NFPA FIREWISE USA® Guidelines.

What it is and How it Works

This retardant is a long term fire retardant that helps stop the spread of wildfires by reducing the combustibility of potential fuels. This non-colored formula works by naturally changing the molecular composition of organic materials such as grass, wood, and vegetation. This change ensures that they no longer serve as fuel, effectively slowing down the rate of spread of the fire. Used as directed, the formula is friendly to people and pets, as well as the environment.

Easy Application

This product comes in a concentrate formula that mixes with water. The 0.75-gallon concentrate bottle produces 5 gallons of product for application and will cover approximately 500 square feet of fuel.

Long Acting Formula

PHOS-CHEK can help protect your property for months. Fuels applied properly will remain incombustible until rain-washes the formula away

One application can help protect your home for months.

PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE is the same formula used by the USDA Forest Service to prevent the spread of wildfires. And it can be easily and effectively applied by any homeowner. PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE can be applied at the beginning of fire season because its non-colored, fast-drying formula helps protect your property from wildfires for months. And if there is an elevated fire risk in your area, you’ll want to make sure you have PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE on hand as your best defense in preventing wildfire from spreading to your property.

Application

Purchase and apply PHOS-CHEK® WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE fire suppressant in late Spring or early Summer when the vegetation has become brown, dry, and stopped growing. When vegetative growth continues after the initial application, a reapplication of PHOS-CHEK  WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE is required. It is recommended that the homeowner keep a second batch of PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE on a shelf in the garage in order to re-apply again after any heavy rain.

Before applying, it is recommended that the homeowner first walk around the property in order to assess risk, potential hazards, and ground topography. Shake well before mixing and only mix with water at the time you plan to use it. When using a 5-gallon sprayer, mix the entire 0.75 gallons of concentrate with 4.25 gallons of water. If using a smaller sprayer, mix 1-part concentrate with 5.5 parts water. For best results, use a paint strainer or cheesecloth when pouring concentrate into the water in order to capture any undissolved particles that could clog the nozzle during application.

Beginning at the foundation line of the structure, apply PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE on the ground around the house and all outbuildings, and onto mulch, wood, leaves, needles, brush, bushes, trees, and other natural cellulose fiber vegetation or products.

PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE fire retardants are also effective on unpainted raw wood surfaces, such as wood decks, fences, siding, and shake roofs. Please note: Application to these surfaces will leave a white residue that should be washed off as soon as possible; therefore, we recommend application to these surfaces as a last resort for extra protection during extreme wildfire conditions.

Spray PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE on all vegetative fuel sources close to the home and around outbuildings to avoid ignition by wind-driven embers. PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE flame retardant should be used in conjunction with standard vegetation management practices and defensible space recommendations according to NFPA FIREWISE USA®  Principles advocated by your local fire department.  https://www.nfpa.org/Public-Education/By-topic/Wildfire/Firewise-USA

PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE is a people and pet friendly long-term fire retardant. Effective immediately when applied, and will be effective for days, weeks, and months while the weather remains dry. However, exposure to heavy rainfall, PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE will wash away. After application, the retardant remains effective as long as it continues to adhere to the treated fuel.

How PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE works:

When PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE comes into contact with a flame, the surface of the treated cellulose turns into a non-flammable carbon which will not carry flame – thus slowing down and preventing the fire from spreading. When vegetation grows, or when PHOS-CHEK  WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE is washed off by heavy rainfall or sprinklers, re-apply the product.

PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE is available as a liquid concentrate that the homeowner mixes with water prior to use.

PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE can be applied easily; just mix and spray around the perimeter of your home, outbuildings and other areas of at-risk fuels. One application can help protect your home and property for months.

PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE works naturally by changing the molecular structure of organic materials like wood and vegetation so they’re no longer combustible. PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE is People, Pet and Environmentally friendly when used as directed.

FAQS

  • WHAT IS IT?
PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE is a Long-Term Fire Retardant that can be applied to vegetation and outbuildings around a home to protect it from wildfire. PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE is a non-colored version of the same long-term fire retardant that is dropped from airplanes and helicopters to combat wildfires by the USDA Forest Service and other state and local firefighting agencies worldwide. PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE long term fire retardant is available as a liquid concentrate that is easily mixed with water and can be applied using most common garden sprayers or larger spray equipment.
  • IS IT RED?
PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE is a non-colored version of the same red fire retardant that has been used to combat wildfires from aircraft and ground apparatus for more than 50 years
  • HOW DOES IT WORK?
PHOS-CHEK HOME WILDFIRE DEFENSE is effective on any cellulose fuel (vegetation, wood, cotton and some plastics, etc.) and works by changing the chemical decomposition process of the treated fuel prior to contact with an active flame.  The surface of the treated fuel is transformed into a non-flammable form of carbon which will not carry flame, keeping the fire from spreading to the next fuel source and slowing and/or stopping the fire spread.
  • HOW DO I MIX IT WITH WATER?
PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE is a liquid concentrate that needs to be mixed with water at a 5.5:1 ratio (water: concentrate). The ¾ gallon HOME DEFENSE retardant concentrate should be poured into a five-gallon container then filled with water (e.g. 4 ¼ gallons of water) to achieve the correct mix ratio. For best results the retardant concentrate should be poured through a strainer or cheese cloth.
  • CAN I SPRAY IT ALL OVER MY HOUSE?
PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE is effective when applied to any cellulose fuel. This includes grass, leaves, needles, brush, wood, bushes, and trees. The recommended application of the retardant is on fuel beds around homes and outbuildings to create a firebreak in the fuels leading up to each structure. The retardant should be used in conjunction with standard vegetation management practices and defensible space recommendations (NFPA FIREWISE USA® Principles) as communicated by your local fire department. Other vegetative fuel sources closer to the home should also be sprayed with retardant to prevent ignition by wind driven embers.
  • HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE is effective immediately after application and will remain effective until it is washed off with heavy water levels (for example, by rain, sprinkler or hose). The retardant will remain effective as long as it continues to adhere to the treated fuel. This can be for days, weeks or months. When the retardant is no longer on the fuel, retreatment is recommended.
  • WHEN YOUR IT BE APPLIED?
PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE can be applied in the late spring or early summer once vegetation has become brown, dry, and stopped growing. Continued vegetation growth after the initial application will warrant reapplication of retardant to new growth of the fuel.
  • IS IT THE SAME AS FIREFIGHTING FOAM OR GEL?
No, PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE is a Long-Term Fire Retardant and is a completely different product than gels and foams. Long-Term Fire Retardant is the only product that can provide long-term protection for days, weeks, or months. Firefighting Gel and foam products, on the other hand, rely on the water they hold to be effective. The contained water can dry out and become ineffective in a matter of hours depending on temperature, humidity, and wind.
  • HOW MUCH WILL I NEED?
PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE should be applied in a perimeter around the home and outbuildings. The width of the retardant application line should be 2x the height of the fuel that is being treated. Some examples are listed in the table below.
how much Phos-Chek will you need?
  • WHAT ABOUT MY HOME, DECK AND FENCES?
While early season pre-treatment of dry vegetation is the best option to safely protect your home well ahead of an active fire, PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE will also be effective on unpainted raw wood such as wood decks, fences, siding, and shake roofs. We do not recommend application directly on homes, roofs and other painted, or stained surfaces since damage to the paint or stain can occur. A light white residue may remain on untreated surfaces treated with PCWHD. For this reason, we only recommend application to these surfaces as a last resort or for extra protection during times of extreme fire weather conditions.
  • IS IT SAFE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?
PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE is safe around people, pets and the environment when used as directed. It is the only long-term fire retardant that is fully qualified by the USDA Forest Service and listed on the USFS Qualified Products List (QPL). Care should be taken to prevent the formation of puddles of the product as it will be attractive to animals; consumption of large quantities of the salty material could cause digestive issues or dehydration in some animals.
  • WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE?
Care should be taken to properly store PHOS-CHEK WILDFIRE HOME DEFENSE inside a garage, shed, or warehouse to protect it from weather and the elements. Containers and packaging should not be exposed to sun for extended periods of time as UV can deteriorate the packaging. Once mixed, it is recommended to apply all product and not store inside applicator/sprayer for more than a few days. If the concentrate has sat for an extended time and separation is noted, it can be easily reconstituted by vigorously shaking the container.
  • DO I NEED TO WEAR PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT?
Eye protection is recommended during application of PHOS-CHEK Wildfire Home Defense. If the product gets on your skin or clothing, you should wash thoroughly with soap and water to clean. If the product does get into your eyes you should flush with ample amounts of water.
  • WHAT ABOUT CLEANUP?
Apply all mixed product to empty the spray equipment. Any left-over retardant should be applied to reinforce an already treated area. Clean the spray equipment with water by filling the tank and spraying water through the spray equipment. Do not spray the water onto areas where the PCWHD was applied. Overspray or applications onto siding, decks, or fences should be washed off as soon as possible with water. General outdoor siding cleaners or mild detergents like dish soap can be used as well.
